NEW GENERATION VILLAGE FOR STREET CHILDREN
MYINGA, BURUNDI

We are working with Burundian charity, New Generation* and UK-based NGO, Street Action** for the design of a facility to reconcile street children in Burundi. We have collaborated with Environmental Engineers from Max Fordham and Landscape Architects, Little Thunder in the design of a village in Myinga which will provide street children with a safe home, place to go to school and opportunities to build their lives. This is an on-going project that envisages the design to be made from the earth on the site, with as little cement as possible. It respects the habits of community and the home, hospitality for visitors, and privacy for families that will make it a place that fits. Plans are also being developed for a Street Children Rehabiliation Centre in the capital, Bujumbura.

*New Generation is a non-profit organisation, focused on training and equipping young people to become the future leaders of Burundi. It was founded by Dieudonne Nahimana in his late teens as a result of the civil war and the impact it had on his own family. Dieudonne ended up on the streets himself, and from that experience had the vision to set up New Generation, to empower the street children of the nation. Due to a lack of social protection and care for street children in Burundi New Generation provides street children with homes, education, leadership training, health programmes, skills training, and, eventually, re-integration into the communities from which they came.

**Street Action are a UK based organisation that works with street children in Burundi, South Africa and have just recently established a partnership in Kenya. Street Action is committed to supporting local partners in Africa who work with street children. They provide sustainable financial support, help develop and link their projects, and promote their work through advocacy and research.
